March. Climate change and sustainable developemnt (Kiev. Ukraine)
ACCA Ukraine, Baltic and Caucasus States and PricewaterhouseCoopers Ukraine joint CPD event led by Henning Drager, Head of ACCA sustainability and CSR projects, was conducted on March 25, 2010 in Kiev, Ukraine.
Issues of sustainability, climate change, carbon and environment accounting are key priorities in ACCA thought leadership program.
In his presentation for ACCA members in Ukraine, Mr. Drager touched upon such issues as UK perspectives and examples of corporate engagement with and response to the climate change challenge, countering the Post Copenhagen (COP 15) blues – how to move the corporate agenda forward, and ACCA’s key contribution to the low carbon transition – an army of carbon accountants and ecological footprint analysts working within an internationally agreed framework.
In particular, ACCA members were updated on sustainability reporting developments. Currently, there are over 70 voluntary sustainability reporting schemes, among which the framework proposed and developed by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a front-runner. From a point of view of the business community, clarity in environment reporing standards is needed, and business is also waiting for the „first mover“, for example to follow. ACCA supports a single mandatory global standard with sectoral considerations to provide a level playing field for business.
The roles of accountancy profession in fostering sustainable developement can be outlined as following:
-
Evaluating returns on low-carbon investment proposals;
-
Develop organisation relevant carbon and greenhouse gases KPI’s (key performance indicators) and related measurement protocols;
-
Advising organisations on emissions trading regimes and development of response strategies;
-
Auditing and assuring carbon and greenhouse gases disclosures;
-
Quantifying financial consequences of climate change;
-
Working towards a development of Global Environment Accounting Standards.
