The One-Minute Interview
Q) What made you choose the ACCA qualification over the other professional qualifications available?
It has always been my aspiration to be involved in the dynamic world of finance and business and ACCA was definitely my first choice when compared to other professional qualifications.
ACCA is recognised worldwide and it is a qualification known for its rigorous and ultra-challenging examinations. The syllabus is constantly updated to be in-line with the ever changing global environment and what we learn is highly practical and applicable in the workplace. As a graduate, overcoming numerous challenges to obtain the ACCA qualification has boosted my self-esteem and given me an immense sense of achievement.
Q) Were there any obstacles you had to overcome while studying for this qualification?
I met plenty of obstacles while studying for this qualification.
I completed my studies part time while previously working full time as a Design Engineering Manager in a big multinational company. It was a challenge juggling my work, studies and personal life and I had to sacrifice the limited free time I had, to catch up on my work or studies when necessary.
Having graduated with a First Class Honours in Bachelor of Engineering from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, I had little previous knowledge of accounting and finance when I first started on my ACCA studies. This made it extra hard to grasp new concepts like Financial Standards, Law, Management Accounting. The syllabus looked foreign to me! But I loved the challenge to learn new things and now that I am equipped with knowledge from both my Engineering and ACCA studies, it helps me to see things better from many different perspectives.
Overcoming the numerous obstacles has helped me grow into a much better person.
Q) Do you think the accountancy profession needs improving? If so, in what areas?
Yes there are areas for improvements. I observe a high turnover in the accountancy profession which in my opinion, is largely contributed to the long working hours and the boredom of doing the same things over and over again.
The profession itself is a highly esteemed one and the work we do is highly valuable contributing to businesses around the world. If we can address these two problems, I am very sure we can attract more people to join the accountancy line and foster the advancement of the profession.
Q) Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I am currently working as a Consultant in the Advisory industry with one of the biggest company in the world, Ernst & Young.
Business Operation and Strategic Management has always been my interest and career aspiration. Therefore, I will continue to equip myself with more knowledge and experience, and to increase my network of contacts. This hopefully, will bring me to a Senior Management level in 10 years time.
Q) What would be your top tip for students combining ACCA studies with a demanding job?
Be focused and dream BIG.
On its own, the ACCA exam is already tough. Combine that with a demanding job and things could get overwhelming. When that happens, stay focused on the reason why you are taking ACCA in the first place. Some sacrifice to set time for studies after work is essential too.
The journey is tough, but dream BIG and go for it!
