ACCA Singapore Members Forum 2011 – Your Views Matter!
The ACCA Singapore Members Forum 2011 – Your Views Matter! was held on 6 April 2011 at the Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre. Here are some highlights:
Have a Voice!
The panel at the forum which consisted of Darryl Wee (Country Head, ACCA Singapore), Kaka Singh (President, ACCA Singapore Local Executive Committee), James Lee and Belinda Young (Ex-officio/Council Members) encouraged members to vote at the next ACCA Annual General Meeting. This is so that Singaporean members who make up the 5th largest market for ACCA have a voice that truly represents them.
ACCA Facebook and Blog
In response to a member’s enquiry about ACCA’s presence on social media networks, the panel was happy to inform members that ACCA Singapore has its own Facebook fan page alongside our global one. In addition, ACCA has a blog on the global website.
ACCA Members at the Workplace
In response to a member’s concern about the demand for ACCA members in the work place, the panel reassured members that employers have consistently expressed confidence in the abilities of our members and praised their technical competence. As long as members continue to display their expertise and perform their responsibilities with the highest professional and ethical standards, there is no reason for employers not to employ their staff based on fair and merit based employment practices.
Helping Affiliates Become Members
Responding to an enquiry on the common hindrances to affiliates becoming members, it was explained that affiliates could be discouraged by cost and having to fulfill rigorous practical experience requirements (PER). The panel therefore encouraged members to help affiliates under their supervision with the membership application process by supporting their achievement of their PER. Supervisors could also look at the possibility of reimbursing or subsidizing fees for their staff. Importantly, members can play a part in encouraging affiliates towards membership by becoming workplace mentors.
ACCA Workplace Mentor Workshop
ACCA Singapore conducted its inaugural Workplace Mentor Workshop on 8 June 2011 attracting more than 60 members who were there to discover how they could guide their teams better. The event, presented by Ros Leah, Head of Professional Development was aimed at introducing the role of the workplace mentor and looked at how members could play an active role in building ACCA by guiding affiliates and students through their practical experience requirements. The session highlighted useful skills and techniques that members could employ in guiding their teams and demonstrated how members could even earn CPD units by mentoring their staff.
