What's New

Singapore needs many more accountants: ACCA

Singapore produces plenty of accountants but the country needs a lot more. 'Just the Big Four (accounting firms) alone, every year they hire about 100 to 200 new staff each,' noted Mr Darryl Wee, Singapore head of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Mr Wee noted that the three local universities produce about 1,000 accountancy graduates a year and ACCA trains 650 to 700, but the number was insufficient to meet market demand.

Mr Wee was commenting on the International Talent Mobility Report, a survey jointly developed by ACCA and recruitment firm Robert Half.

Mr Tim Hird, the Asia managing director of Robert Half, noted that an accountant's role within a company had changed significantly over the past decade, which made finding skilled practitioners a challenge for firms.

Reporting Model Must Adapt

A more integrated reporting model is required that brings together financial, social and environmental reporting, along with the economic context.

The call is made by the International Integrated Reporting Committee (IRCC) – which is backed by the International Federation of Accountants and ACCA – in a discussion paper, Towards Integrated Reporting – Communicating Value in the 21st Century.
