ACCA Pakistan Table Tennis Tournament 2007

ACCA Pakistan Lahore office arranged the first Table Tennis Tournament for ACCA and CAT students on 28 – 29 April 2007 at the National Coaching Centre of Pakistan Sports Complex Gaddafi Stadium Lahore. The tournament was arranged at the Badminton court of the sports complex were three international standard table tennis tables were placed so that three matches for the ‘singles tournament’ can be contested at one time.

Matches among all the players were scheduled in alphabetical order.  Six rounds were contested over a two day tournament on knock out basis i-e Super 18, Elimination Round, Super 8, Quarter Final, Semi Final and the Final. The elimination round was to be contested among the four players with the least scores in the first round but on day 1, we had four walk over players therefore the matches among these players were arranged by the umpire which ended up with two winners and we entered into round 2 with 16 players.

After the elimination round, refreshments were served to all the participants. The refreshments really did the trick and brought the participants back into action. The matches in the Super 8 round were really interesting as the top eight players were dedicated to win from their respective opponents. The matches on first day ended at 4:15pm.

On Sunday, the 29 April, the participants were invited at 1:00 pm where two tables were placed so that everyone could enjoy the quarter final matches. After the quarter finals, Ali Aosjah, Hamid Zebullah, Muhammad Farhan Asim and Zohaib Ahmad Meer qualified for the semi final. The semi final matches were also close ones and the participants looked very determined to defeat their opponent. Hamid took the lead from Ali Aosjah with 21-9 & 21-8 while Zohaib defeated Farhan by 21-17 & 22-20 points.

A match of 3 sets each was contested between Ali Aosjah and Muhammad Farhan Asim for the 2nd Runner up title; which was also enjoyable as both the players were battling for 3rd position pride. And after a very exciting game, Farhan defeated Ali with 21-15 & 21-16 points.

Mr. Asim Qureshi, two times Ex-National Champion in Table Tennis, three times National Games winner, Men’s Single/Doubles No. 1, Silver Medalist SAF Games was the Chief Guest of the event. Mr. Asim is a table tennis team member of Allied Bank and he has also been selected for Common Wealth Table Tennis team of Pakistan. Mr. Asim joined the players at 4:00 pm for the final match of the tournament. The final match of 5 sets was scheduled between Hamid Zaibullah and Zohaib Ahmad Meer.

Both the players displayed an extraordinary play of table tennis. The players were tired after playing the semi final but they never gave up; both showed determination and skill due to which the whole match went up to 5 sets. All the spectators enjoyed each and every shot, and were backing their respective player. Finally Zohaib Ahmad Meer won the long and exciting match with 21-18, 21-13 & 21-17 points and was declared the winner of ACCA Pakistan Table Tennis Tournament 2007.

After the Final match, the Award ceremony took place where Mr. Asim distributed the prizes among the winner, runner up and 2nd runner up. He also presented a certificate to Mr. Adnan Rashid for sponsoring this table tennis tournament.
