Graduate Profiles - Geraldine Cullinane

'Overall I believe that Microsoft is an amazing place for ACCA students, affiliates and members to train and work'

Microsoft Ireland - Geraldine Cullinane, ACCA member, Waterford IT graduate

I graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology in 2005 with a Masters in Accounting. Following my graduation I accepted a role with Microsoft on their Graduate Finance Rotation Programme based at their European, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Operations Centre in Sandyford, Dublin. As you can image, it was a fantastic opportunity for me to joint such a dynamic and exciting organisation with products and services such as Office 365, Azure, Windows Mobile and Xbox Live.

The Finance footprint at the Microsoft site in Ireland is significant with groups such as the Irish Subsidiary Finance, Operations Finance, Western Europe HQ Finance, Internal Audit and Credit Services. During my rotation I was fortunate to gain experience with a number of these groups, commencing my career in the Irish Subsidiary Finance Group and then moving to the Controls and Compliance Group in Operations Finance.

As part of the graduate programme I was required to register with a professional accounting body and complete a professional qualification. I researched numerous qualifications and chose ACCA due to the global nature of qualification and also the diverse curriculum. Under the ACCA Qualification I found the choice of subjects very appealing and relevant to the type of experiences within my role at Microsoft e.g. performance management and IT.

I completed my remaining ACCA exams and became an ACCA member in 2008 once I obtained the relevant accounting experience. I have always experienced a huge level of support during my years of work and study with Microsoft such as an educational assistance package and study leave as well as diverse and interesting work experience which enabled me to complete my practical accounting experience. Microsoft partners with ACCA and is both a Platinum Approved Employer for training ACCA students and an Accredited Employer for professional development for ACCA members.

Gaining my professional qualification has complimented my career progression within Microsoft and the opportunities for qualified ACCA members within Microsoft are immense. The ACCA Qualification I believe has given me an edge in my current role as it has really thought me to think outside of finance and focus on end to end processes as well as fostering a strong accounting and controls focus in my work.

Overall I believe that Microsoft is an amazing place for ACCA students, affiliates and members to train and work. Within Ireland there is a large finance team with diverse roles, exciting products and a clear focus on people development.
