"choosing ACCA was one of the best career decisions I made. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an ambition to work in finance"
BNY Mellon - Cormac Mac Cormaic, ACCA member, UCD graduate
After graduating from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, my focus was on starting a career in finance. Working in funds was ideal, as I enjoyed the fast-moving nature of the industry and realised I had a genuine interest in the area. While further study wasn't a priority for me at that stage, after a few years I realised that I wanted a more focused qualification. I decided to study ACCA as I felt it was relevant to the funds industry. Working in the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC), it was also important to me that it was an internationally recognised qualification.
ACCA is extremely flexible in terms of when to take exams and how I studied for them. I decided to study from home, which suited me best. By using ACCA approved study materials and the online resources, I was very well prepared for the exams.
I joined BNY Mellon in the Centralised Pricing team, which involves valuing assets held in mutual funds. As a centralised unit, we get a lot of exposure in terms of dealing with clients and working on new business projects. The department also has a global focus, which means there are great opportunities for travel within the role. The most enjoyable aspect of my role is that I have had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects. No two days are the same, so I am constantly challenged. More and more, I have found that my ACCA Qualification relates directly to what I am doing on a daily basis.
As an ACCA approved employer, BNY Mellon provided outstanding assistance while I was studying towards the qualification. I was able to take both study and exam days as paid leave while also receiving financial assistance. In addition, as I had gained my experience working for an approved employer, the transfer to membership was straightforward.
For me, choosing ACCA was one of the best career decisions I made. It is a mark of dedication and ability, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an ambition to work in finance.
