Excellence in reporting: Celebrating success of ACCA MESRA 2007 winners
ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) today announced Nestle (Malaysia) Berhad and UEM Environment Sdn Bhd as the main winners of ACCA Malaysia Environmental and Social Reporting Awards (MESRA) 2007. At the award presentation ceremony, four other companies received commendation from ACCA on their reports on the environmental, social and wider economic impacts of their activities.
ACC A MESRA 2007 in its sixth cycle was first introduced in Malaysia in 2002, with the aim to encourage the uptake of sustainability (or corporate responsibility) reporting among companies in Malaysia. Through the Awards, businesses are encouraged to report on the impact of their business operations to environment and society they operate in.
YBhg Dato' Dr Nik Ramlah Nik Mahmood, Managing Director of Securities Commission Malaysia presented the awards to all the winners. ACCA MESRA 2007 saw an increase in participation with 62 entries; 17 entries for environmental reporting and 45 entries for social reporting category.
YBhg Dato' Khalid Ahmad, President of ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee in his Welcome Remarks said that, "Good CR reporting can attract Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) funds, which are worth and estimated USD 4 trillion globally and are rising rapidly. S uch reporting can help companies in attracting these global funds."
On the link between accountants and CR, Khalid explained, "As CR reporting becomes part of mainstream business, the role of accountants and auditors grow too. Accountants play a key role by providing and measuring the social and environmental information, using their skills to improve its quality and facilitate its use to make sound business decisions in areas such as investment appraisal, budgeting and strategic planning. Auditors also will have a significant role in verifying the accuracy of the reported information as well as the systems and practices from which it is derived."
ACCA has promoted greater transparency in the reporting of organisations' social and environmental impacts for over seventeen years. ACCA is involved in reporting awards in more than 26 countries in Europe, Africa, North America/Canada and the Asia Pacific region.
ACCA Awards around the world reward companies for excellence in environmental, social and sustainability reporting. The aim of the Awards is to identify and reward innovative attempts to communicate corporate performance on environmental, social and sustainability performance.
The Awards is endorsed by Bursa Malaysia Berhad, Business Council of Sustainable Development in Malaysia (BCSDM), The Department of
Environment (DOE) and Malaysian Institute of Integrity.
