James K. P. Wong
ACCA Canada would like to congratulate James K. P. Wong, FCCA, CPA, CMA, CGA of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. James has recently been awarded the designation "Certified Fraud Examiner" (CFE) by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners of Austin, Texas, USA. This Association's Board of Regents awards this designation only to selected professionals who meet a stringent set of criteria, including strict character, experience, and education requirements.
James moved to Canada from Hong Kong in 1989 and worked with the Financial Management Board Secretarial of the Government of Northwest Territories before moving to the diamond mining business. He was responsible for the Public Accounts of the Government of Northwest Territories before he left and was instrumental in preparing the first Consolidated Financial Statements in the Government sector in the late 80s. He also contributed his financial and management expertise in the division of the Northwest Territories and the creation of the new territory - Nunavut in the late 90s.
James has extensive experience in the mining industry as well as the public sector and he is currently the Principal Project Controller of Diavik Diamond Mines Inc.(DDMI). The Diavik Diamonds Project is an unincorporated joint venture between DDMI (60%) and Aber Diamond Mines Ltd. (40%). DDMI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto plc of London, England, and Aber Diamond Mines Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aber Diamond Corporation of Toronto, Ontario.
DDMI justed started diamond production early this year and the C$1.3 billion project was under budget and before schedule. The mine is located on a 20 square kilometre island in Lac de Gras, approximately 300 kilometers by air northeast of Yellowknife.
James says that the ACCA qualification helped him tremendously to land his first job in Canada as ACCA is internationally recognized and added great value to his credentials. James is also a professional accountant in Hong Kong and worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in his early years.
He is currently the Vice President of Certifed Management Accountant of Northwest Territories and Nunavut and is also the Chairman of the Audit Committee of City of Yellowknife, the Diamond Capital of North America.
