Nationwide Accounting Challenge

ACCA and Sunway-TES, a subsidiary of Sunway University, launched its 3rd nationwide accounting quiz competition, ACCA Sunway-TES Accounting Challenge 2011, on 13 June for all Chinese Independent Schools in Malaysia.

The accounting quiz, introduced two years ago, aims at promoting interest in the field of accountancy and finance among Chinese-language school students.

'Accountancy is an attractive career option; especially for those who wants to move up the corporate ladder and seek global mobility.  The global demand for accounting talent is increasing, post-crisis, as companies begin to hire accounting professionals, not just for the finance function, but for leadership positions in their businesses. The economic crisis provided heightened visibility of the value that professional accountants bring, and the next decade presents an enormous opportunity for finance professionals to help create and sustain long-term value for organisations. This quiz aims to bring to live the world of accountancy by providing students with the opportunity to apply accounting principles in real world situations', says Jennifer Lopez, Country Head, ACCA Malaysia.

Teo Ee Sing, Executive Director of Sunway-TES adds, 'We received good response for the past two years and know that there is a growing interest from schools to be part of the competition especially since the winning teams will be awarded scholarships to study ACCA in Sunway-TES.

'We hope that more schools will take part in the competition this year', Teo adds further.

The quiz is open to all Senior Middle 2 and Senior Middle 3 accounting students of Chinese independent schools.  The quiz will be based on ACCA's Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) syllabus of Paper FA1 (Recording Financial Transactions) and Paper FA2 (Maintaining Financial Records).

Last year, Chong Hwa Independent High School (Kuala Lumpur) competed against Sabah Tshung Tshin Secondary School (Kota Kinabalu) in the grand final, with the latter winning the competition; the prize being scholarships worth more than RM50,000.

To date, 19 schools in Peninsular Malaysia have confirmed participation while in East Malaysia, 12 schools have confirmed participation.

The first round of the competition, which will be at school level, will commence from 21 to 23 June 2011.  For schools in East Malaysia, Round 2 as well as the final round will be held in Kuching on 16 July 2011.  The winning team from East Malaysia will compete with the winner from Peninsular Malaysia at the Grand Final Round to be held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa on Saturday, 30 July 2011.

The winning team will receive trophies and scholarships worth more than RM125,000 to pursue the ACCA programme at Sunway University or Sunway College Kuching.  First runner-up will receive scholarships worth more than RM50,000 to study ACCA at Sunway University or Sunway College Kuching.
