Richard Chakhala
audit manager
Malawi Institute of Tourism

Attaining his ACCA Qualification in 2005 has been a career highlight for Richard, who lives and works in his native Malawi. 'Recognition, knowledge, professionalism - you name it, there are many benefits,' he says, adding, 'I always wanted to be an accountant and knew I could do it.'

Having obtained his qualification, he now has a broad understanding of a range of accountancy and finance issues and he's in no doubt that determination and hard work have been critical to his career success.

Now an audit manager for the Malawi Institute of Tourism, Richard worked his way from the position of audit junior with a certified public accounting firm, to assistant auditor with the Malawi Posts Corporation, then to internal auditor at the country's Corporate Governance Centre. Now, identifying potential risks and advising on how to mitigate them are the mainstay of his responsibilities, while he says that changing people's attitudes towards, and perceptions of, the audit function, are his main challenge.

Richard has taken full advantage of ACCA's range of partnerships with respected learning institutions, having gained the joint BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Accounting at Oxford Brookes University . 'This has greatly assisted with my research and analysis skills,' he says.
